Not-for-Profits

Not-for-profit organizations (NPO) fill critical roles in communities across Canada. They help extend social services to underserviced demographics, fund much-needed research and create a network of support and opportunities within communities.  Limited resources, increasing competition in the sector, and complex regulatory requirements can make it a challenge for NPOs to operate.

At RMR, our goal is to work alongside organizations like yours to not only ensure financial and tax filing compliances are met but also to advise on operational areas such as internal controls, governance, fundraising and revenue sourcing.  We help organizations manage resources and maintain transparency and accountability so that they are best positioned to pursue and achieve its missions.

Our dedicated professionals offer a full suite of cost-effective services to ensure organizations can keep costs down and continue making a difference.  We have worked extensively with many successful not-for-profits.

Our keys areas of expertise include:

  • Associations make up a unique sector in the Canadian business ecosystem.  They represent members to promote their interest and may also serve a broader social purpose.  Associations must address many of the same challenges as other industries and capitalize on abundant opportunities.

At RMR we are ready to work with your Association whether it is providing recommendations to modernize business tools, review of investments strategy or utilizing financial modelling to strategically manage resources, we’re here to help you help your members.

  • Charities play a vital role in Canada by fostering a sense of community, raising awareness of critical issues that have major impacts and inviting donors to make a meaningful impact. All registered charities must operate through a well-established business plan, board, and governance structure. With competition for funding increasing, demonstrating that your operations are evolving with the latest business trends tells donors that their funding will be thoughtfully and transparently managed, measured, and appropriately dispersed.

RMR provides expert guidance on all the elements that help charities remain relevant—improving workflows, budgeting, internal controls , tax rules and more.   We can help with the operations of your organization so that you can focus on fulfilling the organization’s mandate demonstrate and secure a priority position with your donors.

  • When it comes to your philanthropic legacy, there are several advantages to using a private foundation that can make its establishment a worthwhile investment.

If you are putting together a charitable giving plan or if you have already committed to significant charitable giving, rather than making the donation directly in your name you may want to consider establishing a private foundation to carry out giving plan.  There are several advantages to using a private foundation that can make its establishment a worthwhile investment including timing of the personal tax savings versus the timing of the disbursement of funds to other charities and the ability to involve family and create a lasting multi-generational philanthropic legacy.

It is generally beneficial to consider establishing a private foundation sooner rather than later. Registration can take time. The Canada Revenue Agency may take upwards of six months to assess an application for registration, and you may wish to start funding the private foundation as soon as possible to take advantage of the tax break while doing good in your community.

RMR has over 40 years of experience in working with not-for-profits and we look forward to assisting your organization with:

  • Audited financial statements

  • Charitable status and incorporation decisions

  • Finance reporting

  • Fundraising requirement compliance

When I first met Jeff McRae 15 years ago, I never thought I would be writing a testimonial for an accounting firm. As an entrepreneur, I believe in ‘staying in your lane’ and Jeff and his team at Rosenswig McRae Rosso have proven to be exceptional partners in managing the finances of CAN Fund, an organization I founded 20 years ago to support Canadian athletes competing on the world stage.

The advice and guidance we’ve received from Jeff and Lorraine have generated great conversations, created solutions, and systems that have helped us make a significant impact. In fact, I look forward to our accounting meetings, which speaks volumes about the kind of relationship we have. Congratulations to Rosenswig McRae Rosso for their outstanding work and for the partnerships they create with their clients. I’m grateful for the one we have and look forward to continuing our journey together.
